  • Hardcover. First Edition; First Printing. Very good but for sunned and worn spine, lacking the dust jacket. This book as well as the titles that follow are all from the library of New York Times music critic John S. Wilson [1913-2002], one of the most esteemed jazz critics of his era. One of the first critics to write about jazz in a regular column, he was also well-known as a jazz radio host. The provenance of these books is guaranteed as we purchased them personally from John and his wife. Some are inscribed to him, a few have his signature, some have review slips, a few have a label (supplied by us) laid in, and several have no indication of ownership except from our own business records made when processing the purchase. Most of these books are first printings in their jackets, except for several uncorrected proofs. Two books lacks a dust jacket. Condition is very good+ to fine. Here Lies Leonard Sillman (inscribed by this Broadway producer); Encyc. of Quotations about Music (N. Shapiro, inscr. note); Best of Music Makers (insc. G. Simon); Jazz Country (Hentoff, Review slip); Live at Village Vanguard (proof, Gordon/Hentoff); Jazz Singing (Friedwald, label); Jazz Is (Hentoff, label); Louis (Jones & Chilton, Letter from Publisher); My Life in Jazz (Kaminsky); Great American Popular Singers (Pleasants, JSW marginal comments); Encycl. Folk, Country and Western Music (Stambler, label); Mable Mercer (Haskins, 6pp of JSW notes laid in); Listen: Gerry Mulligan (Klinkowitz, label); Story of Jazz (Stearns, JSW notes & annotations); Discovering Great Singers of Classic Pop (Hemming, proof, JSW notes on cover); Sweetest Music This Side of Heaven [Lombardo] (Herndon, JSW few notes, brackets, label); Jazz Singing (Friedwald. proof, JSW marks); Modern Jazz (Morgan, no dj, JSW marks); American Musical Revue (Bordman, proof, few JSW marks & notes); Golden Age of Jazz (Gottlieb, paperback, pub's note to JSW); Guy (Richman, label).
